We all know the wedding tradition of ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue’. There are many wonderful wedding traditions surrounding getting married, but some of the older ones can be distinctly odd. One tradition that many brides will be happy that is no longer observed is that they would have been the target for lumps of wedding cake being thrown at them by guests as part of a fertility rite. However, bridesmaids could be left with a large laundry bill if they follow the tradition of placing a piece of wedding cake under their pillow which is meant to ensure they dream of the future husband.
Having things thrown at you seems to be popular. In Scotland, there is a particularly nasty pre-wedding tradition that involves the bride and groom being pelted with food trash, including rotten eggs and fish. The Scots believe that if a couple can withstand this, their marriage can withstand anything.
Your wedding day is often described as the happiest day of your life. However, this is not the case in other parts of the world. In the Congo, if you want to ruin someone’s wedding just hire a comedian. In order for the marriage to be taken seriously the bride and groom are not allowed to smile throughout the entire ceremony.
